Saving Money With USAA Insurance Discounts

Like many car insurance companies, USAA has multiple ways members can save money on their auto insurance:

  • Bundling: Buying another policy in addition to auto insurance from USAA—such as home, renters, or life insurance—is an easy way to save.
  • Good grades: USAA offers a discount for full-time student drivers under age 25 who maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 or a B average.
  • Safe driver: Members who maintain good driving records for more than five years receive discounts.
  • Away from home: USAA offers a discount for unmarried, full-time students under age 29 who reside more than 100 miles from their home addresses without vehicles.
  • Defensive driving course: Customers who complete a USAA-approved basic driver training course could see savings on their annual premiums.
  • SafePilot: Members living in an eligible state could save up to 30 percent on their auto insurance through the company’s safe driving program, USAA SafePilot. SafePilot is a smartphone-based telematics program that tracks driving habits via an app.
  • Multivehicle: Adding coverage for two or more cars could trigger a multivehicle discount.
  • Newer vehicles: The company offers savings for customers who are insuring newer vehicles that are less than 3 years old.
  • Anti-theft devices: Members who have anti-theft devices installed on their insured vehicles receive a discount from USAA.
  • Stored vehicles: Customers who store their vehicles, such as during a deployment, could receive up to 60 percent off their auto insurance premiums.
  • Loyal member: Children whose parents have USAA could save up to 10 percent through a family discount when they get their own car insurance policies.

Favorite Features

Gap Insurance

If your vehicle is totaled in an accident, gap coverage could help you purchase another vehicle. When purchasing your vehicle, you can sign up for guaranteed asset protection (GAP) insurance through USAA. Gap coverage would pay the difference between how much you owe the lender for your vehicle and how much you originally paid for the vehicle. Your collision or comprehensive deductible still applies before gap coverage kicks in. You can get gap insurance if you financed your vehicle with a USAA loan. USAA’s interest rates tend to be competitive for new and used cars.

Rental Reimbursement

You can add rental reimbursement, sometimes called transportation expense coverage, to your auto insurance policy. USAA covers rentals when your covered vehicle repairs begin. If your vehicle isn’t drivable, simply make an Enterprise reservation online or through USAA’s mobile app to get your rental car the fastest.

Roadside Assistance

USAA’s roadside assistance is available 24/7, and includes the following:

  • Tow: For mechanical trouble, USAA will tow a customer’s vehicle to a nearby repair shop.
  • Jump start: USAA will send someone to jump-start a dead battery.
  • Flat tire: The company will provide service to replace the flat if the car has a spare tire or will tow the vehicle to a service station.
  • Lockout: If a customer can’t get into the vehicle, the company can send a technician to unlock the car.
  • Fuel delivery: USAA will deliver fuel to a policyholder’s vehicle that runs out of gas. The customer will need to pay for the fuel itself, however.
  • Stuck vehicle: For customers whose vehicles get stuck in the mud or snow, the company will provide assistance to get them moving again.

Even customers who do not include roadside assistance on their policy can still receive assistance at negotiated rates, which USAA states are typically cheaper than calling the provider directly.

Storing Your Car on a Military Base

USAA members who garage their vehicles on military installations could save up to 15 percent. The company provides guidelines for how to safely store a vehicle during a deployment. Many military bases offer designated parking lots for vehicles while the owners are on deployment.

Windshield Repair

The company also has a robust windshield insurance and glass repair service for its auto insurance policyholders. The policies usually cover the following:

  • Windshields: From small chips to entire windshields, USAA repairs or replaces the glass.
  • Side and rear windows: The company also fixes or replaces damaged side or rear windows.
  • Sunroofs and other windows: USAA makes damaged roof glass leakproof and fully operational.

However, most USAA car insurance policies do not cover damage to headlights, taillights, side markers, and fog lights.

Easy to Use Digital Tools

USAA offers an app for android and iOS users, where customers can manage their policies and monitor claims among other things.

USAA’s app includes the following features:

  • Access insurance ID card
  • Request roadside assistance
  • File a claim
  • Pay premiums
